THE CIRCULAR RUINS

THE CIRCULAR RUINS

Chorus 1: If I left off dreaming of you in the Circular Ruins,
I'd have nothing left to do in the Circular Ruins.
And you’d forever cease to be.
I wonder who is dreaming of me in the Circular Ruins.

Verse 1: In the unanimous night,
I beached my boat and kissed the sacred mud.
I came from the South, the river’s mouth, driven by my blood
To a temple devoured by ancient fires,
Crowned by a stone tiger the color of ash.
Driven by invincible intent,
I slept and was awakened by the shriek of a bird and the sound of a crash.

Chorus 2: O, to dream a man, to impose him on reality.
More than a miracle, this is a necessity.

Chorus 1

Verse 2: I dreamt of students surrounding me as far as the centuries,
as high as the stars.
Only those who would oppose me were worthy of this Universe.
I wove a rope out of sand.
I coined the faceless wind.
In the penumbra of my body, the color of garnet, your body did begin:
A year for your organs, a year for your heart,
A year for the skeleton and your infinite hair and eyelids.
Then I looked at this thing that I did.

Chorus 2

Chorus 1 (Instrumental version)

Verse 3: Adam of dust, Adam of dreams:
Tiger, colt, bull, a rose & a storm.
I dreamt a fire in the Circular Ruins to keep my son warm.
The dream phantom animated, I sent you downstream,
To be worshipped in the Pyramids.

Chorus 2

Chorus 1 (Instrumental version)

Verse 4: Soon I will be with my son.
He is waiting for me.
He will not exist if I do not go for him.
I will destroy his memory of apprenticehood.
He will believe himself a man, as any other would.

Chorus 2 (First line, spoken)

Chorus 1

Verse 5: My purpose fulfilled, I remained in ecstasy.
From the South, stories of a Magician came to me:
My son, a mere simulacrum, the projection of my dreams.

Chorus 1

Verse 6: A cloud appeared on a remote hill.
To the South, the sky turned the rose color of leopard's gums.
Clouds of smoke rusted the metallic night.
Wild animals passed by in panic-stricken flight.
sIn a dawn without birds,
Fire licked the walls of the Circular Ruins.
I purified myself in water, then walked into the sheets of flame.
They caressed me, flooded me with relief,
with humiliation,
then terror:
I am the illusion.
Someone else is dreaming me in the Circular Ruins.
