The Mirror of the Sea
I row my kayak on the slough below a fading crescent moon.
Inside a forest of bamboo, I hear the calling of a loon.
I guide my kayak on the tide where otters form a coterie.
They swim around me as I glide out to the mirror of the sea.
All my torment left behind, I can finally calm my mind,
Reflecting on the strong and free. I see me in the mirror of the sea.
Like the ocean giving life because its fullness is so great,
I draw my strength from storm and strife. I love so well because I hate.
Like the sea so dark and deep, I am unknown to you and me.
Hordes of mysteries I keep beneath the mirror of the sea.
All my mornings lay ahead. My future now before me spreads
Like sunfish in the storm's debris. I see me in the mirror of the sea.
Private pacts, public lives. Private acts, public wives.
Private facts, public lies. The press reacts, the lie survives...
A mystery's a thing to bless. I'll live inside my wilderness
With no idea who I will be. I see me in the mirror of the sea.
